A POLITE REVIEW: COBRA KAI SEASON 3
I’m not going to waste your time. Cobra Kai is the most ridiculous popular show out right now and sadly I can’t get enough of this shit. I’m a Karate Kid Stan. It raised me. I’m literally watching The Next Karate Kid on Netflix while I’m typing this and my fellow old people know how terrible that movie is. But let’s get into the brilliant terrible third season of Cobra Kai.
Okay Miguel is in a coma looking death in the face after being kicked off a balcony. Johnny is a wreck. Daniel LaRusso business is suffering because of the karate royal rumble at the school. Robby is a fugitive on the run and Cobra Kai is still the crime organization masquerading as a karate dojo and everyone is being manipulated by a man who is old enough to cash in his social security. John Kreese is probably the most ridiculous thing about season 3.
Now we get a look into Kreese’s backstory of how he joined the army. He was bullied, he was in love, and he was a good soldier. I guess this gives us insight to why he’s a raging lunatic obsessed with corrupting teenagers minds in the valley. Based on this I guess I will say he is quite the stellar villain. He stole Johnny’s business after putting no work into building it back up. Everything bad happening traces back to him.
The best part about season 3 is Johnny and Miguel. They are the fire of the series as a whole and keeps it going. We see Johnny attempt to rebuild his relationship with Miguel and his family. He dedicates his time to help Miguel learn how to walk again. He also attempts yet again to repair his relationship with his son Robby. Johnny isn’t the main focus of this season because Daniel gets more screen time but he still is the most important piece.
Daniel goes back to Okinawa the setting for The Karate Kid Part 2. He sees that Okinawa has discovered capitalism and an outlet mall now sits where the village Mr.Miyagi takes him. He runs into Tomiko who was his love interest in part 2. He runs into Chozen his enemy in part 2 and I actually liked both interactions. Especially with Chozen. Chozen is completely different and a wise man. He admitted that he was an asshole and changed his life to teach the youth in his hometown.
Ali (the woman who started the bitter rivalry between Daniel and Johnny) makes an appearance in this season and it was really well done. She catches up with Johnny and they didn’t force a love story between the two of them which I liked. It was a chance for Johnny who is always stuck in the past actually have closure and gain a friend in Ali. Daniel got to catch up with Ali also and receives closure also but Johnny needed it more than Daniel did.
Again we have a huge royal rumble at the end between Johnny and Daniel’s students and Kreese’s Cobra Kai and is almost paralyzing a person isn’t enough. We see a kid get thrown through Daniel’s kitchen window. The Cobra Kai commit breaking and entering with assault and tears the house apart in a huge brawl. At this point this is where I said to myself “This is the most white privileged show I’ve ever seen. The fact that only 2 people went to jail after that fight was insane.
What’s more insane is after the brawl is over at Daniel’s house and Daniel discovers what happened he goes to Cobra Kai to fight John Kreese and Sam and Miguel stop Daniel from potentially killing this 70 year old man and John Kreese suggest they settle their differences the old fashioned way through The All Valley Karate Tournament. Bro. My house is destroyed. Your students wanted to seriously injure other kids. A kid arm was snapped. You manipulate kids to steal. You put a snake in the place of my business. You need to go to jail my friend. Along with your students. A karate tournament does nothing but enable a clear menace to society. Kreese gets his wish and will be going up against Daniel and Johnny’s new combined dojo at the tournament and the loser has to end their dojo.
Hawk joins the other side after he realizes what Kreese is and understands Kreese does not care about the kids of Cobra Kai. He only cares about this imaginary war in the valley. It definitely made sense for Hawk to leave after his bullies were recruited to Cobra Kai and Kreese didn’t care. I mean breaking your former best friend arm should’ve been the turning point but I won’t complain.
Robby was apart of this season and I promise I did not care at all. He is the weakest link on the show and really it’s because they don’t know what to make him. Is he a hero? Villain? Anti-Hero? He was better off just being a villain from the beginning because he is just boring being anything but that. There’s a scene where he is released from juvenile and he goes to the Larusso residence and he sees Miguel about to kiss Sam and he gets upset at Sam and Miguel. Like BRUH you kicked this kid off a balcony and almost killed him or paralyzed him. You have no right to be upset with anyone. Miguel should be upset that you’re free from jail. Robby is just boring and annoying.
The funniest thing about this show is that it’s just about 3 old white men who cannot let go of the past or let go of their egos and their actions are literally ruining lives in the valley. The next season I assume would have to be the last season. I can’t see where it goes after the tournament.
This show is ridiculous but I love it. Grade A entertainment.
