UPON CURIOSITY
I’m always curious about shit which is a reason why I’m able to write. I don’t believe you can write anything without being curious about everything around you and everything outside of you. I always been a person that’s been observant, quiet, and I just let people talk. Only time I’m talkative is if I’m high or drunk. I haven’t either of those for some time now so there’s been a lot of quiet around these parts. I rarely say shit.
With me being curious I never wanted to be boxed into anything. I don’t want to be just known as a writer and writer only. Don’t get me wrong, writing is my favorite thing to do out of the things I’m good at but I love more things than just writing. We’re not supposed to be boxed in. It’s mentally dysfunctional. It’s not healthy in the slightest.
I don’t like when someone is good at something and since they’re great at that thing everyone expects them to just only do that thing. It becomes a sin for the person to be interested in anything else or try anything else.
“How dare you try something else? I only know you for this! Keep your ass there!”
If you’re good at music and you wanna become an architect or a pilot there shouldn’t be any problem and if anyone has a problem then fuck them. Do what you want. I’m going to get into painting and I can’t paint for shit. I’m terrible at it. That’s not going to stop me. It doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad at something it’s all about how it makes you feel. Does it make you happy? Does it bring you peace? Are you having fun doing it? Is it healthy outlet for you in your life? Does it bring your stress levels down? Those are the questions that matter.
A lot of people are afraid to try something different because of how other people may feel about it. Imagine letting someone else’s thoughts hold you back from doing something positive in your life. Something that could possibly save your life. I’m a big believer in doing things for yourself. You have to be selfish when it comes to this type of shit. A lot of you are sitting on gold and I don’t just mean gold in terms of money I’m talking gold that will help you realize untapped versions of yourself you had no idea existed.
It’s important for you to not just have ideas in your mind and sit on them. You have to put them into something so you can see them alive. For example I said I wanted to paint but it’s because in my mind I see these images and I wonder what they would look like if they were painted on a canvas. If I see it outside of my mind that could trigger another cool idea and lead me to something else. It could lead me to another calling. The difference of perspective between something hoarded in your mind and seeing it come to life in a different form. It doesn’t matter if it’s ugly or pretty. It matters that you can touch it.
Andre 3000 is one of my favorite artists and what I love about him is his elusiveness from the space where people view him as a God. He does not want to sit in the seat that so many artists of any kind work their hearts out to sit in. They wish they could sit in that seat. They thirst for the attention that Andre walks away from. Some don’t understand why Andre doesn’t just do music or marvel in the praise he receives. They feel that way because they’re uncomfortable with their life and don’t like themselves. That blinds them and they aren’t able to see where Andre is coming from. How could they if they haven’t lived it right?
Back to Andre. Andre travels just playing his bass clarinet in different cities publicly. It’s just something he does and something he wants to get good at. He doesn’t care who’s watching or how he looks. Some have called him crazy but is he really crazy or are we crazy for trying to selfishly box him in as only an emcee? His type of confidence in exploring outside of a genre he’s considered Godlike in is something I wish that all artists study. It doesn’t matter who’s sharing your work or retweeting it or the numbers. Keeping score doesn’t do anyone any good.
We saw it with Michael Jordan in the 90’s where he wanted to go play Baseball and he wasn’t awarded the growing pains to get adjusted to a different sport. They were ready to call him a failure before he even took a swing. It was unfathomable for him to play baseball because he was the greatest basketball player in the world. As soon as he went through a slump they crucified him. All the criticism was rooted in the fact that their norm was disturbed. The norm is that Michael Jordan only plays basketball in my lifetime and that’s it. I think if MJ stuck with baseball he would’ve eventually been great at it.
If you ever wanted to learn something but were too scared it’s time to DO IT. Your curiosity and acting upon it is the ticket to something powerful.
Peace
